Recent Study Provides Benchmarks for Affiliate Marketing Managers

Affiliate Summit recently published a report entitled “2010 Affiliate Summit AffStat Report”.  The research covers input from a select group of over 1150 Affiliates to understand the methods, preferences and strategies that they utilize when promoting a program.

The report is a great source of information for Affiliate Marketing Managers to gain insight and find benchmarks that can have a great impact on the development of any Affiliate Marketing Program.

Key statistics mentioned in the report:

  • More people prefer Network Affiliate Programs over Independent-based programs.
  • Majority of Affiliate Marketers say their decision to promote an affiliate offer was based on commission payment policies.
  • 61 percent have tried to get their commissions increased but without success.
  • 47 percent say that they have domains dedicated to a particular affiliate program.
  • Not surprisingly, Twitter and Facebook were the top social networking sites used in Affiliate Marketing efforts.
  • Top 3 Referral Sources where Affiliates found out about a program were through Affiliate Directories, Google or Direct Contact by an Affiliate Marketing Manager.
  • Brand awareness and EPC (Earnings per 100 Clicks) were the most important factors in choosing a merchant.

Also, in the study, affiliates were asked to share any ideas, suggestions, opinions or complaints that they have regarding the businesses that they are promoting.

Here are some of the things they had to say:

  • Advance notice of new products when possible
  • Need more input and better response from Affiliate managers.
  • Frequently update tools and promotional material based on trends
  • Need more apps for bloggers

Based on the statistics and research I have read, here are some ideas for you to think about:

  • Offer a Multi-Tiered Commission Pay-Out Plan based on performance
  • Establish a Private-Label Program that offers look-n-feel of Affiliates website.
  • Utilize Twitter and Facebook to increase the number Affiliate sign-ups.
  • Promote program through Google AdWords PPC Advertising.
  • Develop a Forum website to communicate with your Affiliates.

The research is interesting and insightful; you must definitely read the full report. Access the 2010 Affiliate Summit AffStat Report.
